Donate Now through CanadaHelps.org The Boys and Girls Club of Wetaskiwin was established in 1988 as a society along with Big Brothers Big Sisters as a much-needed affordable community based service for children, youth and families in the City of Wetaskiwin and area. Sharing the same facility, the Wetaskiwin Youth Centre, the Boys and Girls Club of Wetaskiwin are members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada. Under the direction of our own volunteer Board of Directors we are responsible for all our own fundraising but follow the guidelines for program and service delivery set out by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada. The Club programs focus on four key areas essential to healthy child development:

  • Physical Activity, Health and Safety
  • Leadership, Growth and Empowerment
  • Learning and Career Development
  • Community Service

Mission Statement

The Boys and Girls Club of Wetaskiwin provides a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.

Incorporated in the Province of Alberta on April 8th, 1988.

Out of School Care

After School Drop In:

  • The After School Drop In program is open to members aged 6-13
  • Provides a safe and fun environment for children that promotes positive values and attitudes, enhances childrenšs self esteem, builds resiliency and protects children against at-risk behaviours.

TGIF: We offer fun and exciting activities from 6-9 PM on Friday evenings that are open to members.

Native Friendship Club:

  • Open to youth 6-17 years of age
  • Program that is specifically designed to explore and experience the native culture, heritage and spirituality.

Leadership Programs: We provide 2 leadership groups, Keystone (Ages: 13-18) & Torch (Ages: 10-12), that focus on 5 core elements:

  • service to club and community
  • teamwork
  • healthy choices
  • leadership
  • learning for life

Van Shuttle: Transportation to the club is offered to youth members attending: CB McMurrdo, Clear Vista, Norwood, Parkdale and Scared Heart.

Art: Offered for members aged 8-13 to develop fine motor skills and promote creativity.

Homework Help: Hands on tutoring for children aged 6-13 in a quiet space. Trained tutors will provide support and encouragement.

Cooking/Crafts: Cooking/Crafts club is a program designed for members aged 6-13 that focuses on enhancing cooking & craft skill development through group work.

Day Camps:

  • Offered on non-instructional school days and during the summer to youth aged 6-12.
  • Summer program consists of eight, one-week sessions commencing in July and ending in August.
  • Included in the programs are: crafts, games, sports & field trips.

Assets in Youth: Assists youth in developing skills to reduce personal stress and problems they may be experiencing. An outreach component is implemented in order to address and reduce youth related issues within the community and to connect with youth in their natural environments.

Millet Out of School Care: Licenced Before and After School Care for children 5-12 years of age. This program is delivered from Millet School in the morning from 7am-8:35am and in the afternoons from 3:15pm - 6:30pm. Healthy breakfast and snacks are provided. Care is also available for non-instructional school days. Government Subsidies available - www.child.alberta.ca.


BOYS & GIRLS CLUB CALENDAR

Hello parents/guardians, welcome to another great month of Boys and Girls Club programs. Here are the program notes for the month of April:

Day Camps this month are Apr 6th - 9th & 30th. Sign up for the Day Camp on Apr 30th will begin on Monday, Apr 19th.

TGIF this month is Apr 16th. Sign up for the TGIF program starts on Mondays unless otherwise specified. * We now require a minimum of 10 participants signed up in this program by Thursdays in order for it to run.

The Torch and Keystone leadership programs both have retreats during the month of April. The Keystone retreat will take place Apr 9th - 11th at Gull Lake Camp and the Torch retreat will happen Apr 30th - May 2nd at Lone Prairie Camp. For more information, please talk to Justin or Cal.

We will have a new program starting April 15th called "Yoga Kids". This program will teach children aged 6-9 all about Yoga through a variety of interactive activities. It will operate on Thursdays from 4:15-5:15 pm. The HUB program facilitates this program. For more info please contact staff.

The club is excited to announce that we have been chosen as the 2010 Wetaskiwin McHappy Day recipient for this fundraising event. On Wednesday, May 5th McHappy Day will take place at McDonald's Restaurants across Canada. This day is the major fundraiser for Ronald McDonalds Houses, and funds are shared equally between local chosen charities and the Houses. We are pleased to announce that we will be using this day to kick-start a Capital Campaign to upgrade the outside play area behind the Boys and Girls Club. We will be helping out in various ways before the actual May 5th date and need your help. We have 500 "red shoes" to sell for a loonie each - which can be picked up starting April 1st at the Boys and Girls Club. We will be holding a contest with a prize for the child or youth that sells the most "shoes". On the actual day, children will be required to help sell balloons, etc. which will assist in the fundraising goal of the event - more to come later about this. If you or your business would be interested in donating to the silent auction table, or the business card Board, please let us know. Enrichment Program

The Enrichment Program is a personalized counselling program that supports youth and parents in building skills. The 12 week program includes both weekly solution focused individual counselling and psycho-education groups sessions and strives to create an environment where active participants can realize strengths, feel safe, respected and connected, experience success and feel empowered.

In-Home Family Support Program

Matches qualified service providers to families and youth who have been referred by Child Welfare agencies or other applicable agencies. Services include:

  • Family Support Worker will assist the assigned family through a variety of interventions to reach family goals as required in the areas of self-esteem and personal growth issues, parenting, problem solving, home management and accessing community resources.
  • The Youth Worker will assist in providing structure and stability through recreational activities, which aid and reinforce the rewards of changing behaviors.
  • The Visit Supervisor will ensure that a safe and supportive environment is maintained in order to facilitate family visits.

Day Care

Operating under the Alberta Child Care Licensing Regulation Act, the Wetaskiwin Early Learning and Child Care Centre will open its doors in September 2009 with space for 64 children, from 12 month to 6 years.

  • Play, Learn and have Fun in a safe, positive environment.
  • Enthusiastic, dedicated, certified staff providing quality care and encouraging your child's optimal development.
  • New, clean, friendly, child care facility.
  • Licensed program and will be applying to be an Accredited program.
  • Responsive program delivery to address your family's child care needs, such as extended hours, full time, part time and drop in hours.
  • Government Subsidies available to assist with, up to 73% of fees.

At the time of registration, parents will be required to provide the Child Care Director with twelve (12) post-dated cheques, dated for the first of each month. Cheques will be payable to the Boys and Girls Club of Wetaskiwin.

There will be a $25.00 fee for any N.S.F. cheques, and delinquent fees will be due immediately. Failure to pay fees may result in the termination of child care services and a deposit may be required for future child care services.


Subsidy Schedule

Eligibility for child care subsidy is dependant on the household income and the size of the family.
